Today we met in our House Groups to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year.
Our awesome House Captains led these sessions. All students got to make Matariki stars, design kowhaiwhai patterns, design and make lanterns and play some games. Here are a few photos from McLaren House.
On Friday 22nd November Redwood School participated in the Tawa Cultural Festival. This is an event that has grown and grown over the last few years, with all the Tawa primary School and the Intermediate performing.
We were welcomed to Tawa Intermediate with a pōwhiri, with Kingsley Walton unexpectedly representing the manuhiri on the paepae and performing his whaikorero with mana. Redwood School performed their bracket as a tribute to Levi Kohiti, who was an enthusiastic member of our Kapa Haka Performance Group. As you can see from the video below it is a good job that we only took our Senior Kapa Haka Performance Group (Year 3-6), as all 73 of this group only just fitted onto the Tawa Intermediate stage. A big thank you to Vanessa Serci for co-ordinating this group, and to Te Rehia and Liz (our wonderful Kapa Haka tutors) for their support on the day. On Wednesday 14th August 6 students, supported by Mr Kyne attended the Mathswell competition hosted by Paremata School. The team were Shea Allen, Liam Farrow, Lucas Currington, Mia Harada, Rose Fairbrother and Hayley Shum, with Lana Magee and Reuben Humphrey as reserves.
![]() Altrusa is a service organisation that was founded in the USA just over 100 years ago. We contribute to the community through hands-on service, literacy projects, fundraisers and international outreach. Altrusa International of Ohariu is a brand new club that covers a similar geographic area to the Ohariu electorate in Wellington. Our project “Get set for a brighter future” aims to provide sets of literacy resources that empower women and children to develop new skills, extend their knowledge, and understand the opportunities that are created through education. Altrusa have purchased sets of instructional readers for Linden Primary School, sets of novels for the Arohata Prison Library Book Club, and sets of books that represent women in technology for local primary and intermediate school libraries, providing a total of over 250 brand-new books to our local community. We hope that the books we are donating to your school will provide positive role models for girls who may be encouraged to pursue STEM careers, and offer teachers a wider variety of teaching resources. We welcome new ideas and aim to provide flexibility so that our members can give their time in a way that works for them. Meetings are held at 7.30pm on the second Thursday of each month in central Johnsonville. Guests are always welcome; contact the Club President to arrange a no obligation visit and see what Altrusa is all about! [email protected], http://facebook.com/altrusaohariu This term we asked our community three questions:
We had 32 responses. Whilst this was lower than we had hoped, the level of responses and depth of thinking were really appreciated. The feedback we received will be looked at in detail and considered as we begin the process of shaping our local curriculum. I have compiled the feedback we received into word clouds to help us easily visualise the themes that have come through from responses. Our vision is: Redwood School is a community engaging and empowering lifelong learners. As a school, what can we do further to bring this vision to life? What knowledge, skills, attitudes and values, or dispositions do you believe Redwood School students should be equipped with when they leave our school? Health and wellbeing are critical aspects of a child's learning at school. What do you believe your child(ren) should be taught at Redwood School to ensure they are healthy, happy, and equipped to cope with the world they are living in?
